The environment
ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY
At the Blue Seas we know we are really lucky to live in such an unspoiled environment and we are conscious of our impact on it.
As an organisation we take our environmental responsibilities seriously.
Our aim is to keep it to a minimum without affecting the excellent quality of service and accommodation we provide.
We want to achieve this by promoting a responsable and sustainable tourism.
Produces
Wherever possible we source our ingredients from local producers, keeping the local economy running and lowering the mileage. For our guests, we use the best Cornish produces supplied from local farms. We use organic, rainforest alliance and fair trade products where these are available. We grow our own herbs in season.
Energy
From June 2007 we will get our electricity and gas from RSPB energy .Electricity from RSPB Energy is produced from renewable sources, including hydro-power and wind power, which do not create harmful emissions. We have already reduced our overall consumption of electricity by using low energy lighting and switching off all unused electrical devices.
Heating
We use gas for our central heating and hot water system. The system, a condensation installed in 2003, was the most efficient on the market at the time. Each room is individually heated through radiator valves and two thermostat timers control the whole.
Water
We installed flow reducers on taps where possible, fitted more efficient water tanks in toilets and changed all the baths for showers. We try to water the garden using our water butt.
Cleaning and washing
Most of our cleaning products come from M & A Environment Ltd and we use eco-balls for the washing and drying.
Waste
We compost our kitchen waste in our composter and wormery but first of all we try to reduce our waste by not producing it. We buy in bulk when possible reducing packaging and ask suppliers to avoid them at a maximum (a long way to go, there!).
We print as less as possible (virtually nothing) and only use recycled paper.
Recycling
We recycle as much as possible and encourage our guests to do likewise. Cardboard, papers, cans and glasses are all brought to the collection point. Items which can be re-used are given away through the association Freecycle . We also use recycled materials where possible ( napkins, toilet paper..)
What can you do?
You can help us by using water and electricity in a sensible way. Switch off your TV and lights when you leave the room. Re-use towels will help us saving a lot of water. You can also use the recycling bags provided in your room to make sure that no unnecessary items go to the bin.
Future
But of course, there is still a lot to do. During 2008 and 2009 we are planning to lease or buy an electrical vehicle through eco-drive and to improve the use of bio-fuel in our diesel car.
We will also try to improve our windows with double glazing at the front. We are a grade II listed building so it may take some time.
